Christian Godard
Scriptwriter-cum-comics-artist Christian GODARD always moves ahead of the times. His career in the comic books world started in the sixties, when he created various series for magazines and newspapers. He worked with René GOSCINNY, drawing several series for him like Pipsi, Jacquot Le Mousse and Tromblon & Bottaclou.
He then began to write and draw his own projects, including Norbert & Kari, set in Polynesia, which earned him a faithful fan following.
In the late 60s he started his most famous series, Martin Milan, for Le Journal de Tintin. His drawings and storylines are inventive and filled with humour, and, graphically speaking, he is considered an excellent representative of the French-Belgian style – but his stories always have had that special twist that makes them unique and unforgettable.
A few years later, in the early 70s, he was introduced to artist Julio RIBERA ; they worked together on La Vie d’un Héros, a short story for Pilote Magazine ; they got on so well that he wrote for RIBERA the space-opera/sci-fi/fantasy epic Le Vagabond des Limbes (a.k.a. Axle Munshine, Vagabond of Limbo) for the French magazine Pilote. The series later ran in the American edition of Heavy Metal Magazine and still runs with great success, now comprising 32 volumes ; some twenty episodes were published within their own publishing house, Le Vaisseau d’Argent Éditeur, a maverick company which also helped reveal to the public several artists, like Sergio Macedo (Brasil), Florence Magnin (L’Autre Monde) or Mohammed Aouamri (Sylve).
Godard & Ribera’s fruitful association spawned numerous other remarkable books and series, from historical evocations like Les Derniers Valois in L'Histoire de France en Bandes Dessinées, to Le Grand Manque through Je Suis Un Monstre, to Le Grand Scandale, Le Fils de L’Orfèvre (a prequel to the adventures of Axle Munshine) and the Ghlomes chronicles. The ever prolific Christian GODARD has written countless scripts for other artists, in every possible genre, like the ironic La Jungle en Folie (20 episodes) for Mic DELINX ; La bande à Bonnot, Les Dossiers de l’Archange and Le Bras du demon for the late, great Florenci CLAVÉ ; Toupet (18 episodes) for Albert BLESTEAU, Doc Veto for ACHDÉ, Oki for Eric JUSZEZAK, Le Cybertueur and the thriller Dédales for Claude PLUMAIL, Shamira for Nicolas RYSER...
He still occasionally draws for other writers like Jacky GOUPIL for the GUIDES EN BD series (Le Guide du Mariage, le Guide du Ras-le-bol, le Guide des Voisins) and for himself (the sequel to the Jungle Gone Wild series : Il était une fois le Tuyéti).
But this multi-talented hyphenate also pursued several other simultaneous careers, exec-producing TV shows, painting, writing comedy sketches and plays (Brindamour), musicals (Les Camisoles), crime novels (Pavane Pour Un Catcheur Défunt, Entre Deux Eaux, Boomerang; Le Fils du Notaire, with E.Metain), an interactive comics DVD (Attila, un Barbare défie l’Empire), children's books (Elliot ou la Cabane).
The 2020s are off to a great start with the publishing of the four-volume MARTIN MILAN Integrale omnibus edition at Le Lombard Editions...
